Rowing and HorsePower!

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to present to the Creighton University Women’s Rowing Team!  It was an honor to speak with 50 of the most intelligent, driven, motivated and invested young women I’ve ever met!
After being on the water with them the day before, I discovered that rowing is a tough sport!
The team is up at 5:30 AM six days a week to practice.
They have to “row as one”, be incredibly proficient and as tough as nails!
The average race will consist of between 200-230 strokes and will take 7 minutes.  The first minute is aerobic…and the last 6 minutes is a painful “pull from within” anaerobic exercise!
Everyone has to do the same thing at the same time and the strokes must be absolutely consistent.  This takes complete concentration…and tremendous teamwork, leadership and communication!
I learned that rowing is one of the best models of teamwork!  It’s the ultimate team sport!

In rowing you have the power of everyone in the boat and on this team everyone is both valued and part of something bigger.  The egos and personal agenda’s won’t work because if everyone were to follow their own paths…they’d be spinning in circles!
The leadership opportunities in rowing are incredible.  The coxswains job is to know what the teams needs are at any time.  To know where their heads are at and be able to channel that energy! They need to correct the course making small adjustments and movements – because changes in direction make a big impact!  And, most importantly, they need to have the respect and trust of their team to win!
In rowing there is a very unique communication…using non-verbal, unspoken interaction! It incorporates body language and tactile feel to “hear” how everyone is rowing -“hear” the balance -“hear” the synchronization!
Rowing is Dedication, Focus, Rhythm and Trust.  It’s consistency in discipline! Teamwork and focus are critical!
HorsePower is “Riding Every Stride”!  Its sustained effort, focus, steadiness, work and consistency done over time that produces results!
Wow…Rowing and HorsePower…what a combination!
The powerful messages and lessons in teamwork, leadership and communication that we talked about that day – will hopefully have an impact on these talented young women….I know they will with me.
HorsePower will help you stay the course toward achieving your goals and realizing success!

Self-Discipline through HorsePower!

“You can never conquer the mountain.  You can only conquer yourself”.
-Jim Whittaker, American mountaineer and CEO
Here’s what makes a friend of mine, Jim, so unique and successful…..
Jim wakes up each morning before dawn to exercise for 1 ½ hours.  He works in his office very efficiently, with total focus, ignoring distractions and devoting his time and attention to high value projects.  In the evenings, Jim is involved in projects for self-improvement, expansion and growth.
5 days a week he joins others as dedicated as himself in improving his knowledge, abilities and acumen regarding current global and cultural affairs.
Did I mention that Jim is also happily married with 3 kids and 2 dogs?
How do people like Jim achieve so much, so consistently?  And how can we accomplish as much in our personal lives and careers?
Part of the answer lies in self-discipline.  This is what pushes us to deliver!  It’s part of the HorsePower concept!
HorsePower is sustained effort, focus, steadiness, work and consistency done over time that produces results!
If we have self-discipline, we are able to endure the short term inconvenience or discomfort for the successful pursuit of the long-term gain!
HorsePower will help you stay on course toward achieving your goals and realizing success!

2,500,000,000 Heartbeats in a Lifetime!

Did you know that there are 2,500,000,000 heartbeats in a lifetime!
Are you making them count?
Is your 2014 already looking a lot like 2013?  We’re only a few days into 2014 and have you noticed that most of your New Year’s resolutions are already abandoned?
OK! There’s no rule that if you’ve messed up you have to wait until next year to start fresh! Let’s just consider that’s the “past” and start again from today!
One mark of high achievers is goal-setting.  All of the successful people I know set goals and shoot for them…and they eventually hit their target! You might already be working on your list of goals – increasing your income, launching a new project or starting a new business. That’s good!  Go for it!  But remember not to neglect the areas you’ll regret the most if you fail to give them attention. You’ve only got 2,500,000,000 heartbeats!
You’ve all heard the story of the person on their deathbed and when asked what they regret the most they say it’s not having spent more time away from work.  Sometimes the distinction between work time and personal time gets fuzzy!
You might be working on a special project while you put off your much-needed vacation.  You might skip the gym or get shorter sleep to stay on top of e-mail and calls. You might be working at night while your family is waiting to spend some time with you… You could be setting yourself up for some big regrets!  We’ve all been there…so let’s take some time in our goals to change this pattern!
What if 2014 could be your best year ever…and your most balanced year?
You can achieve success AND still have quality time and experiences with your family, social life and take care of your health! You can make 2014 your best year ever – not just for your career, but also your everyday life!
Take a minute and look over your 2014 goal list.  Make sure it encompasses all aspects of what’s important to you.
You want to make every 2,500,000,000 heartbeat count!
Don’t waste the best moments of your life ignoring the best things in your life!
Live with intentional HorsePower and you can achieve success in both your personal and professional lives!
HorsePower will help you stay on course toward achieving your goals and realizing success!

Leadership and the Super Bowl – After the Game! A “Half-Time” Evaluation and Exercise for your Business!

Ok – the game is over, the commercials were great, and I ate way too many chips!
“When you want to win a game, you have to teach.  When you lose a game, you have to learn.” Tom Landry
Here are some of my observations about football, leadership, and what leaders must do in making the adjustments for the future!  Let me know your thoughts!
·       At half time, whether the teams are winning or behind, they talk about what is working and what’s not.
·       They talk about what’s hurting them and holding them back.
·       They talk about what needs to change quickly and what they need to do differently.
·       They’ve learned from the 1st half…and their making the adjustments fast.  They’re staying “frosty”!
Ok…let’s say its half time in your business!  Take this quick “Half-Time” Evaluation and Exercise to determine your next game of play!
·       In which areas are you ahead in expectations? In which areas are you behind?
·       What’s working (scoring points!)?  What’s not (the competition’s ahead)?
·       What are you learning?
·       What do you need to change quickly?
·       What adjustments do you need to make?
·       What’s the plan of action, timeline, resources and plan for winning in 2014?
Remember teach, connect, collaborate and inspire your players to aspire to success…you’re the champions!

Goals and Inspiration for 2014… with HorsePower!

Goals and Inspiration for 2014… with HorsePower!
Happy New Year!  The last few weeks I have been with clients welcoming the New Year, setting goals and establishing new expectations for a successful 2014! I am so excited and passionate about what 2014 will bring!
Are you excited about your plans for 2014?  Whether you want to grow your business, improve your health or you have any other long-term goals, keep these HorsePower improvement insights in mind:
Be honest. Understand where you improved and where you dropped the ball. Today, you’re a lot wiser than you were yesterday! Identify and forgive past mistakes, hard times, struggles and now focus on improving and succeeding!
Be ready to change!  You will never change your life until you change something that you do daily.  Improvement is based on the decisions we make and the disciplines we practice!
Appreciate how far you’ve come!  Ask me about the “Note to Self” concept to really appreciate what you’ve done and accomplished.  Give yourself some credit!
You can’t manage without measuring.  Keep your goals specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-bound.
Set credible expectations for your improvement! Be realistic and remember that there is no greater recipe for failure than setting a “goal” that’s more than a “pipe dream”!
Be ready to change and go outside the “comfort zone”! Continual change is essential for continual improvement! Continually stretch and grow!  I have a sign in my office – “Betti…get out of your comfort zone 3X/day…DO IT NOW!”
Motivation gets you started.  Habits keep you going! Focus on establishing habits so you’ll keep the momentum up when the motivation starts to fade.
Focus!  Concentrate on a max of 3 areas in which you desire to grow and succeed in the coming year.  Don’t take on too many things.  If you focus and throw your energies into those areas – they’ll happen!
Spend 80% of your time working on your strengths! This refers to your skill set…not your character.  Focus on developing and growing in your areas of strength. Growth in a strength area has the potential to make you absolutely exceptional!
Remember success develops daily, not in a day!  Ask yourself:  “Is what I am doing today getting me closer to my goal tomorrow?
HorsePower will help you stay on course toward achieving your goals and realizing success!

Making Thanksgiving a Holiday to Remember…and Continue to Express Gratitude Every Day!

Imagine a life where people did not bother to say thank you or express gratitude.  Imagine an environment devoid of benevolence, kindness and humility. That life would be very sad!
Thanksgiving is not a time to have a binge fest and it’s not the time to get a head start on Christmas shopping.
That comes the next day!
The underlying philosophy behind Thanksgiving is to offer thanks. Thanksgiving is integral to our American culture.   Many years ago, the Pilgrims of Plymouth said a prayer of thanks for the bountiful gifts bestowed upon them.  They shared their food with the natives of the land, who had helped them in difficult times and this tradition of sharing the Thanksgiving meal continues even today.  Most of us are all so fortunate and blessed with abundant food and loving families.  Many people are not that lucky and Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to appreciate everything around us and express gratitude, honor the Thanksgiving tradition and share our gifts with family and friends – even those less fortunate than us.
On Thanksgiving – spread the message of gratitude and kindness.  Inspire those around you to make Thanksgiving a festival of generosity and love.  Change people forever with kindness, positive reinforcement, appreciation and gratitude!
For my family, friends, associates and customers – thank you for being in my life!  I appreciate you and I’m continually inspired by you!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Betti
Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.
Henry Ward Beecher
Got no check books, got no banks. Still I’d like to express my thanks – I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night!
Irving Berlin
Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.
Theodore Roosevelt
On Thanksgiving Day we acknowledge our dependence

Self-Motivation Skills and Secrets…with HorsePower! Self-Motivating Tips to Live Life to the Fullest!

My motto today?  Make Today Ridiculously Amazing!
Let’s face it – life’s short and you only live once! Make it worthwhile…and never take even one day for granted!
Mark Twain said: “The fear of death follows from the fear of life.  A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time!”
It’s easy to look at people who are happy, successful and having fun and assume that they have never had any pain or difficulties in their life.  Wrong.  I have found that the more you have lived, the more you realize that happiness takes work!  People who smile in public have been through every bit as much as people who cry, frown, scream and make others miserable.  They just have the courage and strength to smile through it anyway.  They keep a positive attitude and they are self-motivated to live life to the fullest and accomplish their dreams!
So how do you ensure you’re living life to the fullest?
Think about these self-motivation tips:
Decide what’s really important to you.  It doesn’t matter what it is.  Everyone has their own attitudes, ideas and opinions – but at the end of the day – it’s up to you.  You’re going to be the only person around for the rest of your life! Do what truly makes you happy.  Everything else will fall into place.
Take risks…lots of them!  Every reward carries risk with it.  If you never take risks, you’ll never get anywhere in life.  When people look back on their lives, they regret the chances they didn’t take more than the ones they did. Twenty years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do!  Always continue to Explore, Dream and Discover!
Tell people you love them and how much they mean to you.  Family and friends will always appreciate hearing you love them.  It brightens a stranger’s day! If you have a romance – go for it!  Let people know that they matter, that you appreciate them and that they are special to you!  Remember to compliment others and go out of your way to say thanks and show appreciation.  It costs nothing and has such a powerful affect!
Live in the present.  Your past is important to learn from.  Your future is important to work towards.  At the end of the day, though, the only thing that exists outside your head and you can have an impact on is the present!  Think about your past and future…but concentrate and focus on the present!
Ignore the haters.  No matter what you decide to do with your life, there will always be someone around to point out the many ways you’ll fail.  Know that every winner loses, but not every loser wins.  Successful people don’t start out successful…what makes them successful is that they keep pushing through failure! They don’t give up…they live with HorsePower…they work consistently over time with sustained effort, focus and steadiness…and they don’t have time in their lives or future for negative people!
Never compromise your values.  If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.  Don’t compromise on your internal code of ethics.  Life is never black and white – it’s filled with gray areas.  Trust your instincts.  Do whatever you want so long as you can look yourself in the mirror and be proud of what you see! Remember the values of authenticity, integrity and trust.  These values are key elements in the HorsePower programs – and are critical in solid leadership – both personally and professionally!
Keep your mind open.  Just because you’re right about something doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to look at it.  Listening to ideas you don’t agree with or understand keeps your brain active and healthy.  It also gives you a wider perspective in understanding, teaming up and collaborating with others!
Speak through you actions.  You’ll always hear people say “I had that idea,” every time you see someone create something great.  Everyone had the idea for Facebook first.  The reason Mark Zuckerberg got rich off  of it is because he went out and did it while everyone else was talking about it.  Ideas are useless if you don’t act upon them.
Also, remember the saying, “Actions speak louder than words?”  It’s true.  Actions are where you prove your credibility!
Life is awesome!  Live it to the fullest!
