Self-Motivation Skills and Secrets…with HorsePower! Self-Motivating Tips to Achieve Your Vision!

You are the captain of your ship!
You control the reins for your success!
You have the vision of where you want to go and what you want to achieve!
Here are some tips and strategies that will help you actualize your vision, goals and tremendous, untapped potential!
Control the Reins!
·       Start simple.  Keep motivators around you – people and things that will give you that initial spark and support to get you going and keep the momentum up! Surround yourself with positive and motivated people – those that will support you and your vision!
·       Be willing to leave your comfort zone.   Your comfort zone is your worst enemy and greatest barrier to your achieving success!  Great things will happen when you make friends with your “discomfort zone”…make it your new normal!
·       Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.  Wisdom comes from making millions of mistakes!
·       Change is going to happen! Be prepared to sacrifice who you are for who you are capable of becoming!
·       Only think empowering, expansive, “ridiculously amazing” thoughts! Never indulge in self-limiting thinking. It’s not for you!
·       Keep learning!  Read, listen to inspiring tapes and take in everything you can! The more you learn…the more confident you become!  Spend at least one hour a day in self-development!
·       Train yourself to finish what you start.  Don’t let yourself become scattered when trying to accomplish a task. Finish one task before you begin another.
·       Never quit!  When you experience a setback or frustration – plow through it!  Success could be just around the corner!
·       Stay positive.  See the good in the bad.  When encountering obstacles, you want to be in the habit of finding what works to get over them.  That way, no matter what happens, you’ll always come out on top!
·       Sometimes, you just have to stop thinking!  Just do.  Just get going…and you’ll develop the momentum you’ll need.  Its like “muscle memory” for the brain.  It will kick in!  Just do it! (Thanks Nike!)
·       Know yourself!  Keep notes and think back when your motivation sucked and when you’ve felt like a superstar!  You’ll see a pattern that, once you are aware of it, you can work around and develop.
·       Be your own best coach!  Keep track of your progress!  When you see yourself growing – nurture you!
·       Live fully in the present moment.  When you live in the past or the future you can’t make things happen in the present! The real tragedy in life is not how much we suffer… but rather in how much we miss….so don’t miss a thing!
·       Dare to dream big dreams!
What’s going to happen here is you will gradually develop certain skills that will become motivational habits! The cycle and momentum (HorsePower!)will continue, and you’ll be an incredibly self-motivated person who will consistently achieve your vision and goals!
Remember, your potential is awesome!

Self-Motivation Skills and Secrets…with HorsePower! The Three Foundations

Back in high school, I’ll never forget a teacher I had who started the school year with the statement: “It’s not my job to entertain you or motivate you. It’s my job to teach you and it’s up to you to learn and get as much out of this class as you want.”  At the time, I thought that was a little insensitive and harsh…but she was right.  It was the student’s responsibility to listen, learn and apply what she was teaching…and I’ve always remembered that life lesson and have related to it in different ways.
Bottom line…no one can motivate anyone to do anything! All a person can do for another is provide them with ideas, incentives and insights to motivate themselves.  Actually the best motivation is self-motivation!  No one succeeds in life without self-generated drive!  If you rely on others to energize you, or hesitate until the mood is right, or delay until circumstances are ideal, you’re going to spend most of your life waiting!  Truly successful people motivate themselves internally rather than depend on external incentives!
The Three basics to start the foundation for self-motivation are:
Refine your vision
A vision is a picture of the future that excites and energizes your mind, will and emotions to do everything in your power to achieve it. It’s what gets you excited! It’s what gives you the momentum to get up in the morning! It leads you and provides the spark that propels you!  Vision activates your sense of purpose and gives your life meaning!  The clearer your vision the more motivated you’ll be!
Take 100% responsibility for yourself, your future…and your vision!
That high school teacher taught me that I was responsible and accountable…for myself!  Other people’s
expectations can dissuade us from living out our purpose in life.  If you always try to please others instead of following your own dreams – you’ll burnout.  Remember, someone else’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality!
Protect your vision and stay focused! Keep in mind that negative emotions can also serve as strong de-motivators.  Don’t let your emotions dictate what you do and how you react! A strong component of Emotional Intelligence is taking the steps you know are right – even when your emotions are “running-amok”!
Become your own best friend and manage yourself to fulfill your vision!
Have a plan and chart your course to achievement!
A lack of direction will lead to either paralysis or a lot of wasted energy…which will undercut your motivation and the achievement of your vision!
Successful people will research their plans so they stay on course!  Develop your long term and short term goals – to achieve your vision and guide your day-to-day activities.  You’ll have your strong plan…and your self-motivation skills will only get stronger as you move towards your goals and achieve that vision!

Motivation – A Combination of Magic and Power!

The past few weeks I have had the opportunity to speak and work with new “Communicating with HorsePower” customers. It’s been exciting! After the presentations and meetings I am constantly reminded how this program is so beneficial for companies, organizations and individuals…and how much I love what I’m doing!
I am passionate about the HorsePower programs and concepts – and I always get as excited and motivated as my audiences when we look at the future and what it can bring with HorsePower!
Motivation is a powerful internal force that drives and motivates us to greatness.  It is the energy that keeps us going and empowers us to success!

A successful sales person once told me, “I am like a storage battery constantly discharging energy, and unless I am recharged at frequent intervals, I soon run dry.” The HorsePower Programs recharge those batteries and illuminate the road to success!
I once read that the road to happiness lies in two simple principles: To find out what it is that really interest you and discover what it is that you can do well.  Then – put your heart and soul into it – every bit of energy, ambition and natural ability you have…and you will be successful!
You can’t let fears or doubts detour you on your road to happiness and success.  You’ve got to be courageous!  Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not the better abilities or ideas – but to possess the courage it takes to bet on your ideas and dreams, to take the calculated risk…and act!
You can’t be afraid of what the future might hold!  You’ve got to live in the anticipation of the new opportunities that lie ahead.  That’s what makes life fun and exciting!
Great successes are performed not by strength…but by HORSEPOWER… perseverance!  Persistent people begin their success where others end in failure!  If you’ve got the guts and determination to stick something out…you are going to make it!
There is a genius in persistence.  It will conquer all opposition.  Persistence gives confidence!  It blows the obstacles away! You never give up!  You keep pushing on!
Believe that you will accomplish whatever you set out to do…and you will succeed! You will conquer by continuing on! Take the chance!  Embrace change!  The person who is wildly successful will always be the one who was willing to do and dare!

Your Attitude is Everything…Even a Strong Communication Skill!

You don’t know your own strength!
When you believe in yourself and have a great attitude, you have the power to control your own life and the behaviors of others!  No matter what happens…you are in charge!
Attitude is the way you think.  Attitude is the way you act… in fact, your attitude says everything about you!  Your attitude is integral in your communication and life success!
Your attitude is something that other people can actually see.  They can hear your attitude in your voice, see it in the way you move and even feel it when they are with you!  Your attitude expresses itself in everything you do, all the time, wherever you are!  Your attitude is a very powerful way to communicate and it is a mirror into your thoughts, feeling and soul!
Remember this important communication skill:  Positive attitudes will always invite positive results.  Negative attitudes will always invite negative results!
Attitude makes a difference every hour, every day, and in everything that you do for your entire life!
In fact, what you get out of life and in each thing you do will equal the attitude you have when you do it!
Anything you do with a positive attitude will always work for you!  And anything you do with a negative attitude will work against you!
If you have a positive attitude, you will be looking for ways to solve the problems that you can solve…and you’ll be letting go the things over which you have no control.
We’ve all heard that happiness is not getting to the final destination…it’s everything in the travelling experience that brings the happiness! Having a good attitude and believing in happiness will bring the happiness in everything we do.
You can develop a positive attitude by emphasizing the good, by being tough minded…and by always refusing defeat!
Remember, happiness is a conscious choice, it’s having the right attitude!  When you have a positive attitude, there is no limit to what you can achieve!  You have the power!  Especially when it’s combined with HorsePower!

Productivity, Engagement and TRUST

How many times have I heard over the past few years “I’m doing the work of 3 people!”…  “They eliminate people but not the workloads!”…or “We are now doing more work with less people”….
Do you have more work to complete than any human being can achieve in a day? Does the work just keep piling up? Is this a habitual problem at your company? Is morale low? If all of this sounds familiar, then join the club of millions of workers who feel the same exact way you do!
Ok – go get a rubber band…..
I view the workload issue like a rubber band.  In good times, when workloads are low, the rubber band is slack, people are comfortable and when experiencing the occasional “peak of stretch”, they can handle it. However, in recent years, as the economy has gotten tighter, the rubber band of resources gets stretched tighter and tighter until it almost snaps.  And, when it does snap,  people break down from the workloads, stress and are overwhelmed.  We’ve all seen it and it’s not pretty.
Here’s something else to think about as you ponder your rubber band.  When you stretch anything beyond its elastic limit, then its ability to go back to a “normal” state is lost.  Take your rubber band – hold it fully stretched for a long time  and it will never go back to its original state. This happens to people who have been held at the snapping point so long that they “just get used to it”,  forget what a normal, reasonable workload is – experience frustration, decrease productivity and no longer enjoy their jobs. Then the ugly negativity sets in….
How many of you have witnessed people who are constantly complaining about their “crushing workloads” however, when you’ve watched them, they really do have opportunities to conserve time and positively change their productivity levels. When I’ve listened to different managers, I’ve heard that they do not have enough resources to get the jobs done.  The familiar statement is “I simply need more people to do the work” yet when these managers get together to discuss how they can make improvements, they will often state that they are frustrated because too many people are goofing off and not applying themselves. Interesting…..
Now – put your rubber band down…..
Did you know that the average company in the USA obtains less than 50% of the potential from their workforce on a regular basis? There is a definite disconnect between how people perceive being overworked and overloaded and the actual state of the workload.  According to a recent study of 2000 people, roughly 60% of people felt they were bogged down, yet in reality there was plenty of productive time remaining, and with some basic reengineering of functions, systems and habits, there would be even more time available!
The cure for this problem is getting an employee engaged….and the road to achieve engagement is connected with TRUST!  Without trust, workers will not reach their potential because they will not feel engaged in the work!  When a leader engages their team and truly trusts the people on that team – that team feels special, empowered and that they are being trusted to make improvements.  They are considered as a “high trust group”…and that specially trusted group will achieve a higher level of productivity…every time!
When you employ and develop a culture of trust, in both your personal and professional arenas, you achieve results and success – with HorsePower!

Leading with Authenticity, Integrity, Respect, and Trust

Everyone wants successful relationships where they can trust, have faith and rely on others! What makes for great relationships in both business and in our personal lives?  How we present ourselves, what we stand for and how we expect others to present themselves is what makes relationships successful or not successful.
The first step is starting with respect.  If we don’t respect those we have relationships with, in both our personal and professional lives, it’s going to be hard for us to feel safe and trust others. Without respect – there’s not going to be a real relationship! Trust is an important factor in everything we do and we seek people we can trust!  So starting with respect – it is the first building block and foundation for trust.
Respect has to be earned.  Our actions will either build up or tear down trust – and once it’s damaged – it’s hard to build back.  To build respect we must act with real authenticity and integrity. And we must respect ourselves.
Authenticity is where we learn to be real.  Too often I see people who are fake and phony.  We all have known people who are “counterfeit” – and we walk away, never feeling comfortable in trusting them. When someone is authentic it’s easy to believe they are what and who they say they are.
Part of being authentic is when someone is congruent with both their actions and words. They do what they say they’re going to do! You can rely and count on them! When a person is congruent it becomes easy to trust what they say and not have to worry about being taken advantage of.
Integrity is what it’s all about.  When you tell the truth, no matter how rough and tough it is, you are being authentic and will be seen as having integrity. Integrity to me is all about honesty and fairness.  This means that we are fair to both others and ourselves in the dealings we have every day.
There will always be conflicts of interest in our lives.  Integrity is what allows us to ask ourselves what the conflicts are and what is the best way to manage them.  Leaders know that when you manage conflicts well – you will be trusted and respected by those around you – no matter how tough the situation and outcome.
I’ll be honest… those who show all these traits are the people I want to be around, have as friends, do business with and have in my life.  These are people that always think about being honest, fair, are authentic, have integrity and are trustworthy.  They are the people I admire the most, want to learn from and have strong relationships with. They are invaluable!

Thoughts for Memorial Day

As we celebrate this Memorial Day, I thought I’d share with you a very special thought:
“But the freedom that they fought for and the country grand they wrought for,
The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children.”
William Havard
My friends, as you remember the sacrifices that have been made to secure our freedoms, have a safe and blessed Memorial Day – make it special!
Enjoy this day with your friends and family – appreciate and “ride every stride”!

Body Language

Body language is not just how we hold and move our bodies…it also encompasses:
  • How we position our bodies when sitting, standing, leaning…
  • Our closeness to others, the space between others, and us and how it changes
  • Our facial expressions
  • Our eyes especially and how we move and focus them (are you an “eye-roller”???)
  • How we touch others and ourselves in a conversation
  • How our bodies connect with things like pens, cigarettes, spectacles, clothing, furniture, etc.
  • Our breathing, our heartbeats and perspiration
  • Our voices…very important!  The pace, pitch, volume, variation, pauses, intonation…

Body Language is especially crucial when you’re meeting someone for the first time! We form our opinions of someone we meet for the first time in just a few seconds, and this initial instinctual assessment is based much more on what we see and feel about the other person than on the words they speak!  On many occasions we form a strong view about someone before they can speak even a single word! And remember…this works both ways!

When you understand the importance of body language – you have a gift that will give you a significant advantage in life – professionally and personally!
Body Language is a powerful concept that successful people tend to understand very well.  Make it work for you…with HorsePower!

Understanding Body Language and Strengthening Your Non-Verbal Communication Skills

An essential part of communication and strengthening your interaction skills is understanding body language.  Understanding “Non-Verbal Communication” is critical in not only recognizing, appreciating, learning and gaining perspective into another person’s feelings and thoughts – but also in knowing how you yourself are being perceived!
Body language refers to the nonverbal signals that we use to communicate.  These nonverbal signals are a large part of our daily communications and interactions with others.  From our facial expressions to our body movements, the things we don’t say are incredibly important and can convey volumes of information!

Body language and non-verbal communication is thought to account for between 50-70% of all communication!
Body language is relevant to all types of interactions – management, leadership, all aspects of work and business… in addition to personal, family, parental relationships and bonds.
Communication includes listening and observing… a special type of witnessing, studying and perceiving of observable body language, messages, non-verbal signals.
Body language can go both ways…
Your own body language reveals your feelings and meanings to others! Do you know what messages you’re sending to others?
Other people’s body language reveals their feelings and meanings to you!
Be aware of the messages you’re sending out…and getting in.
And remember…those body signals happen on conscious and unconscious levels!
Always keep in mind that body language is not an exact science and no single body language sign is a reliable indicator.
Understanding body language involves the interpretation of several consistent signals to support a particular conclusion…so don’t be too quick to jump to an assumption!
When you understand the importance of body language – you have a gift that will give you a significant advantage in life – professionally and personally!
Body Language is a powerful concept that successful people tend to understand very well.  Make it work for you…with HorsePower!
