Insights on Achieving With Purpose, Power & Passion

Listen with HorsePower

Listening is a magnet…it’s a strange thing…it’s a creative force.  Never underestimate its power! The people who listen to us are the ones we will always move towards.  When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand. We know that person…who is listening to us…really cares.
The most successful leaders in business always listen to learn…and then they lead.
When leaders listen – they empower.  They gain commitment. When a leader listens, they encourage diversity and collaboration! A true leader must be compelling in their ability to help others embrace change and company values that will lead an organization to success.  They have to be able to do more than just verbally communicate.  True leadership requires the ability to listen…and listen intently!
Listening at all levels of an organization will foster openness, collaboration and a sharing of ideas.  When a person listens, they proved the opportunity to give the gift of meaningful feedback.  That gift will enable everyone to feel valuable and grow.
So, I have a few questions for you to think about:
Who have you really, truly, deeply and emphatically listened to lately?
Think about a particular friend, colleague, and family member.  How can you use listening to help this person “unfold and expand”?  How by listening to this person can a particular challenge or issue be resolved?
Who has listened deeply and intently to you in the past?  How did you feel?
What did that mean to you both personally and professionally?
Never underestimate the powerful tool of listening! Listen with HorsePower!

Growing your Emotional Intelligence Skills

Can empathy skills be taught? Can you develop your emotional intelligence and empathic capacities and increase trust and builds bonds?
People are born with general emotional intelligence that will determine their potential for learning emotional competencies.  Research shows that if EI competencies can be improved, then they are sustainable!  Older people show higher levels of empathy, suggesting that empathy may be learned through life experience.  The more situations you experience, the easier it will be for you to emphasize with others and “put yourself in their shoes”.
So, while IQ is very much fixed…..EI can be improved with the right motivation!

Tips to improve your Emotional Intelligence:
Ask people questions about their lives, interests, hobbies, their challenges, their families, their aspirations!
Pay attention not only to verbal cues but also to body language. It can say so much more!
Listen without judging. Tricky…but so important.
Use active listening; double check the meaning of what another person is saying by paraphrasing.
Don’t interrupt.  Don’t change the subject. Let the person talk….and you listen!
Be fully present with body and mind.  Never multi-task! Don’t read e-mails, take calls or think of something else.
Encourage people to speak – especially the quiet ones.
Grow in your emotional intelligence skills! Always!

Here is a video about Communicating with HorsePower!  Enjoy

Big hearts, little hearts, red hearts, white hearts ….you’re going to see a lot of hearts this Valentine’s Day!

While you’re enjoying this Valentine’s Day with your loved ones, remember to take care of your own heart! One of the best ways to do this is by controlling stress!
I once went to a lecture where the speaker, when explaining stress management to the audience raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” The answers called out ranged from 2 to 5 pounds.
The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t really matter.  It depends on how long you try to hold it.  If you hold it for a minute…no problem.  If you hold it for an hour…you’re going to have an ache in your arm.  If you hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.  In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it becomes”.
That’s the way it is with stress management.  If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.  As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.  When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden!

So, before you go any further today, put the burdens away for a while.  Don’t carry it with you.  You can pick up the issues later.  Whatever burdens your carrying right now…let them down for a moment and take a break…it will be good for your heart!
So my friends, on this Valentine’s Day, put down whatever is a burden to you right now.  Don’t pick it up again until after you’ve rested.  Maybe give it a rest for the entire day!  It will help your heart, will decrease your stress…and let you enjoy this Valentine’s Day with your loved ones!
I thought I’d share some great thoughts on dealing with stress in life that we all encounter. Enjoy – I hope they make you smile and relax a little:
·       A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery … on a detour!
·       Always keep your words soft and sweet…you might have to eat them later!
·       If you can’t be kind…at least have the decency to be vague!
·       Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time because then you won’t have a leg to stand on!
·       We could learn a lot from crayons…Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors…but they all have to live in the same box!
Happy Valentine’s Day…and remember that being able to communicate your love and appreciation is the most important form of communication!

The Power of Gratitude

On behalf of everyone with the Betti Coffey Presents “Communicating with HorsePower” Team, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Holiday!  I imagine you’re eating leftovers, enjoying family and friends and continuing to appreciate everything this special season brings.
As we close this month’s inspirations for “Appreciation, Gratitude and the Power of Positive Reinforcement”, I want to share these thoughts – especially at this time:
There is nothing more powerful than experiencing gratitude. True appreciation for all the people, places and experiences in your life. Take time to notice everything…large and small. Look at the sky, feel the earth and breathe the air! Listen and take notice of everything that is surrounding you! Take stock of all the things you love and all the things you may take for granted.  Appreciate your health, your opportunities and those around you who bring you joy or challenge you to continue to grow! Take time to create or add to your “gratitude list”.  Remember, when you express your gratitude – it grows and strengthens beyond imagination!
Gratitude is not only the greatest of all assets…it is the parent of all the others!
Grateful for you!
Betti C.

Temple Grandin

During the Texas Trail of Fame in Ft. Worth a few weeks ago, I had the very special opportunity to meet and speak with Dr. Temple Grandin.
She is a doctor of animal science and professor at CSU, bestselling author, and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior.  She was the subject of the award winning biographical film “Temple Grandin”, in 2010, and was listed in the Time 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world in the “heroes” category.
I admire her tremendously and feel very fortunate to have met her. What an opportunity!
